March for the Alternative
This gallery contains photos taken at the TUC March for the Alternative, UK Uncut's direct action on Oxford Street, & the subsequent disorder in central London.
Roughly one third to one half of the gallery consists of images of police in riot gear and masked protesters. However, they are only one (photogenic) side of the story.
Please remember that hundreds of thousands of people marched through London peacefully to the rally in Hyde Park, and left equally peacefully. The clashes seen here last about a minute, and are punctuated with long stretches of nothing happening.
It was not a violent day, nor was it filled with vandalism. For most of the day it was cheerful, upbeat, friendly, and safe. Hundreds of thousands of people enjoyed a day out and made their voices heard. But some violence did occur; and some of it is documented below.
